Virtually anywhere you choose to live in the greater Charlotte area, chances are you'll find that you're only a short distance from a lake. Lake Norman, with its wide expanse of open water and 520 miles of shoreline is located to the north. To the south, Lake Wylie straddles the NC/SC border with 325 miles of shoreline, and has a reputation for outstanding bass fishing. Located between the two, Mountain Island Lake with its 61-mile shoreline offers a quiet retreat partially surrounded by a nature preserve. There also are numerous smaller lakes scattered throughout the area.

Unlike many other areas of the country, much of the shoreline around Charlotte's lakes is open for residential development. As a result, prospective home owners who want to live on or near the water have plenty to chose from. As a general rule, waterfront property and private homes or condominiums convenient to uptown Charlotte command higher prices than properties located off the water or further away from town.
